Life is driven by aspirations. We have dreams that motivate us to work hard and strive for success. But having big milestones in life can lead to “living in the gaps”. It leads to someone waiting for that one thing to happen before we allow ourselves to be happy.
What do I mean by living in the gap?
It’s the mindset that we need a certain event or circumstance to happen before we can experience happiness. We may tell ourselves, “I will be happy once I get that job I’ve been eyeing,” or “I will be happy once I move to a new country”.
While it’s okay to have goals and work towards them, it’s not okay to put our happiness on hold until we achieve them. These events will definitely bring momentary happiness, but nothing lasts.
There will always be another “gap” to fill. Once you reach your initial goal, there will be another goal waiting across the horizon. The cycle continues, and we end up waiting for the next big thing to happen before we allow ourselves to be happy.
It is a dangerous trap that prevents us from fully living in the present. We forget to appreciate the little things that are happening around us right now. We forget to enjoy the present and become consumed by thoughts of the future.
Take time each day to reflect on the things you’re thankful for. This will help you appreciate what you have in your life right now. Enjoy the process of achieving your goals and appreciate the lessons you learn along the way.
